Development and Research Trends of Application as the Smart Education Media for ASD

Abstract
With the expectation that mobile applications for smart phone and tablet devices has a potential tool to effectively support the performances of persons with ASD, this study analyzed applications developmental trends for ASD and investigate trends and future directions in research regarding applications as the smart education media for ASD by reviewing literature related to special education for ASD by 2012. First, this study categorized applications for ASD as eight domains for use. These 8 domains are communication?language, social skills, visual?auditory support, general education, creative tasks, occupational therapy, information for parents, life and skill support. After analyzing these eight domains, each domain was analysed usability linked to the specialty of ASD. Second, based on the criteria suggested in this study, a total of 11 articles were identified. The articles were categorized into three themes including: (1) teaching instruction method using app, (2) perception and evaluation of apps and intervention components for ASD, (3) report and analysis of communication support apps. After analyzing these three themes, each article was analyzed with sub-variables across three themes such as published year, participants, research methods, and settings. Based on the findings of this study, implications for trends and future directions in research and development regarding apps for ASD are provided as follows: (1) It need to develop many Korean apps for ASD and to apply it many ASD participants. (2) To develop apps for ASD, it need to consider the character of ASD like communication, organization skills, visual/auditory in-put, academic skills and social skills defections and apps will be used for support these efficiently. (3) It is expected that smart devices have a potential tools as effective individualized education tool in inclusion settings with ASD. (4) It need to develop Korean AAC apps contents.
